Who are we?

Chester MESH is a Chester (U.K.) based self-help group aimed at people from Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales suffering with, or carers of people with, CFS/ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) who wish to be pro-active in their own recovery programme.

It is run by local people who either have ME or are carers of people with ME. We have no medical qualifications but over the years have acquired a fund of experiences that we share with others. The aim of the group is not to tell people what treatments to try but rather to share our collective experiences.

Perhaps, equally important is the emotional and psychological support of sharing these experiences which helps engender a positive attitude.

We hold meetings six times a year in Chester that are open to anybody with an interest in the subject. If you wish to join us then there is a simple form to complete. This then allows you access to our library of books, audio tapes and video tapes together with our regular newsletter. There is no charge for joining Chester MESH, we charge £2.00 admission to our meetings and some members who cannot attend meetings have donated stamps to help with posting them newsletters.

At each meeting the aim is to have a practitioner or therapist speaking on a different topic followed by questions and a discussion. The hope is to stimulate the sharing of experiences and views as we can all learn much from each other. Think of the meetings as shop windows of what is available in our area without any commitment.

There is also the opportunity to talk to others who have M.E. over a drink.

The Group usually meets the first Saturday of February, April, June, August, October and December in Hoole Community Centre, Westminster  Road, Hoole, Chester from 1.00pm to 2.30pm. This is easily found just off Hoole Road (A56), which is the main road into Chester from the M53 (look for the green 'Chester MESH' road signs on the day of the meeting). The centre is fully accessible and has a toilet for the disabled. There is a large car park immediately outside the main entrance at the side of the building. (see map)

The Group was started in November 1995 with Claire Francis (Patron of Action for ME) as guest speaker.

Chester MESH does not recommend any particular treatments or services. Before trying any new therapy you should discuss it with your doctor. A therapy which helps some people might not help you, and could possibly make you worse.
